What is the best internet provider in Detroit?

AT&T, Xfinity, and EarthLink all have great coverage and fast speeds available to most of metro Detroit. These three ISPs also have widely available gigabit speeds for large households and internet speed demons.

Each of these providers—along with every other ISP operating in the city—has its own pros and cons.

For one, AT&T has great starting prices and bundles, but its fiber network is only available to a little more than half of Detroit households. Xfinity is a little more expensive, but its fast cable internet speeds can be found pretty much everywhere.

What is the fastest internet provider in Detroit?

The fastest major internet service provider (ISP) in Detroit is AT&T, with fiber speeds up to 5,000 Mbps. While that’s probably more speed than you need, AT&T has a variety of high-speed fiber plans that come with all the benefits of fiber-optic internet.

Xfinity is the fastest cable ISP in Detroit, with its Gigabit plan offering speeds up to 1,200 Mbps. Like AT&T, Xfinity offers a good variety of speed tiers to choose from. Xfinity came in at second in our fastest internet providers in 2022 analysis, higher than any other cable ISP.

Rocket fiber is technically the fastest ISP in the Detroit area, with internet speeds up to an incredible 10,000 Mbps—but Rocket Fibers’ availability isn’t as good as the ISPs mentioned above.

What is the cheapest internet provider in Detroit?

Wow! is the cheapest internet provider in Detroit, offering 100 Mbps for just $19.99 per month—a great value. Xfinity has affordable internet plans starting at $30 per month, but at 75 Mbps, is not as good of a bargain as Wow!’s starter plan.

Spectrum has the most expensive starter plan, at $50 per month, but you get speeds to match with 300 Mbps—that’s more speed per dollar than Wow! or Xfinity’s budget plans.

The satellite internet provider, Viasat, has affordable plans starting at $30 per month, but Satellite internet is the slowest type of internet—still, this might be a good option for those with minimal internet needs.

Highest-rated internet providers in Detroit

T-Mobile is the highest-rated provider in Detroit, according to our annual customer satisfaction survey. T-Mobile’s 5G home internet earned high scores across the board, but customers were particularly happy with the service’s pricing and customer service. T-Mobile’s internet service is extremely easy to set up, use, and maintain; its plan pricing is also very competitive and straightforward, including everything for a flat $50 per month.

If you’re leaning towards cable internet, we’ve got good news: one of Detriot’s primary cable internet providers, Xfinity received the highest internet speed ratings among national ISPs in the survey for the second year in a row. Xfinity also received great ratings for overall customer satisfaction.

Fastest internet service providers in Detroit

Rocket Fiber offers internet at speeds up to 10000 Mbps

AT&T offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

EarthLink offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

Easy Internet Now offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

Many internet providers in Detroit offer speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps or gigabit), and you may even find providers offering even more than a gig. Of course, not everyone has access to those ridiculously fast speeds (or wants to pay for them). But chances are good that you’ll find fast speeds in your area.

Download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps are available to 100% of Detroit zip codes. Gigabit internet speeds are great for large families, exceptionally heavy internet users, or people who just want to get the fastest speed and never think about it again. Fiber gigabit internet, like that provided by AT&T and EarthLink, is especially great for anyone looking for lightning fast upload speeds as well as fast download speeds.

AT&T vs. Spectrum

Xfinity vs. Spectrum

Both of these ISPs offer fast cable internet connections, but each has an edge. Spectrum’s unlimited data is perfect for heavy-usage households, and Xfinity’s max speeds go above and beyond.

Detroit residential internet coverage

AT&T

AT&T offers both fiber and DSL internet coverage in Detroit. The provider’s fiber service is much faster than its DSL plans in the area (up to 5,000 Mbps for fiber compared to 100 Mbps for DSL), so it’s good that AT&T’s fiber network covers more than half the city.

Xfinity

Xfinity, like AT&T, is available throughout Detroit and beyond. This cable provider covers a large part of southeast Michigan extending from Detroit out to Ann Arbor and up to Flint. There are a few gaps in coverage around the Detroit Metro Airport, Wyandotte, and Farmington. But for the most part, you can find fast Xfinity Internet and speeds up to 1,200 Mbps anywhere around metro Detroit.

Spectrum

Though Spectrum provides its speedy cable internet services to a large part of Michigan, its presence in Detroit is still pretty minimal. You can find Spectrum Internet in Warrendale and around Detroit Metro Airport.

Other providers

Several smaller ISPs operate throughout metro Detroit as well, including fiber providers like WOW!, EarthLink, and Rocket Fiber. And according to data from the FCC’s Fixed Broadband Deployment Map, almost all of metro Detroit has three or more options for internet plans with speeds of at least 25 Mbps.

AT&T

“I have been an AT&T customer 25+ years, and have defended their service against co-workers and family members alike.”

–Christopher K.

Xfinity

“Overall, as far as big telecoms companies go (I currently work at the biggest one) comcast honestly isn’t THAT bad. They keep their network up to date and I think that the secret to dealing with them is being educated.”

–David B.

Spectrum

“I’m very happy with my service with Charter/Spectrum. We rarely have problems, and when we do, Charter is on top of it, restoring service very quickly.”

Detroit internet FAQ

What is the best internet provider in Michigan?

It’s hard to say if there is one best ISP in an entire state, but both AT&T and Spectrum are widely available throughout Michigan. And since availability is the most important part of internet service, we’d hazard that one of those two providers is your best bet. Xfinity also has great availability in southeast Michigan and offers competitive speeds and prices.

But choosing the best internet service for you goes a bit beyond finding which ISPs are generally good. You should also consider availability in your area, how much internet speed you need, and price when picking a plan.

What's the fastest internet in Detroit?

Xfinity is the fastest cable internet provider in Detroit according to our study of the fastest internet providers in the Midwest. But several internet providers offer gigabit (and even multigigabit) internet speeds across the city, including Xfinity, AT&T, EarthLink, Spectrum, WOW!, Toast.net, and Rocket Fiber (now Snip Internet).

How much does internet cost in Detroit?

Prices for internet plans in Detroit range from $20 to over $100 per month. That covers a variety of internet speeds, but comparing your options and checking out internet deals can save you some money. Our favorite plan is the Xfinity Connect More plan , which costs $25 a month for speeds up to 200 Mbps.
