Fiber internet providers in Portland

What is the best internet provider in Portland?

Xfinity is the best internet provider in Portland. It has the widest coverage, the fastest cable speeds, and options for cheap internet starting at $19.99 per month.

CenturyLink comes in behind Xfinity, boasting equally widespread coverage but a more limited set of options. CenturyLink’s fiber internet plan is a steal of a deal, but most Portland customers will likely be stuck with the provider’s much slower DSL connection.

Several smaller providers, including Ziply, infoStructure, and Sawtooth Technologies, also offer fiber and DSL options for homes and businesses. Those living in rural areas can tap into satellite internet with Viasat or HughesNet.

Highest-rated internet providers in Portland

T-Mobile Home Internet is the highest rated ISP in Portland, according to our annual customer satisfaction survey. Customers gave T-Mobile’s 5G home internet some of the highest scores in the survey, ranking T-Mobile near the top in all categories.

Xfinity customers also gave great ratings, especially in the category of speed. Xfinity received the highest speed ratings among national providers for the second year in a row; 93% of Xfinity customers said their internet speeds meet the needs of their household.

CenturyLink didn’t receive high overall scores, but we think that’s largely due to its DSL internet. CenturyLink’s fiber customers gave excellent ratings. And to sweeten the deal, CenturyLink customers reported the fewest price hikes among national ISPs.

Ziply Fiber offers internet at speeds up to 6000 Mbps

Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 1200 Mbps

Astound Broadband offers internet at speeds up to 1200 Mbps

Stephouse Networks offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps

Portland residential internet coverage

Xfinity and CenturyLink are the two main internet providers in Portland. They both have very large networks in the city—although their speeds and packages are much different.

Xfinity is a cable provider, with fast speeds as well as many cheap packages and regular deals. CenturyLink is a DSL and fiber provider, with gigabit speeds available in limited areas but mostly slower speeds at a bargain rate.

Ziply is another somewhat large internet provider in Portland. It recently took over the fiber and DSL infrastructure previously operated by Frontier, so it provides both services to some parts of the city.

You can also get internet from local and regional providers like infoStructure and Sawtooth Technologies. Either of them may be worth looking into, since local ISPs are known to offer more accessible and reliable customer service compared to national competitors.

Last but not least, HughesNet and Viasat provide satellite coverage in and around Portland. Satellite is generally quite expensive and has limited speeds and data, but it’s useful in areas where fiber, cable, or DSL options aren’t available. Hard to reach pockets of the Willamette Valley might require satellite service.

Portland has fast internet in the Silicon Forest

We can’t talk about Portland without mentioning the city of Hillsboro, the famed tech hub in Washington County.

The fastest internet you’ll find in the Silicon Forest comes from Xfinity, with speeds up to 1,200 Mbps. CenturyLink also offers a fiber gigabit plan in Hillsboro, but you may have to be content with DSL if you’re going with CenturyLink.

I had Xfinity in Portland and again in DC. The internet itself is great. There were days it would be completely out because they were doing work on it in my area. Once was when I was a remote guest lecturer for a university and I had to cancel because of the unexpected issue. But those weren't frequent. My biggest issue with them as been customer service. The people you talk to are actually really nice and try hard to be helpful, but their "system" prioritizes penny-pinching and not the customer. You have to go through all their hoops to "prove" you need to talk to an agent. Then, once you do, it can be a long wait time on hold. This is especially frustrating when you have to call multiple times for the same issue that you already "proved" needed an agent. I spent HOURS on the line with them when I moved because somehow my modem magically disappeared from their inventory. I'm not sure what that even means but it did prevent them from being able to transfer the service. They made me go to a nearby store, which had a line out the door and a wait time of 30-45 minutes to even be seen. They told me it was like this all the time and got worse in evenings. I really, really dislike companies that turn their own issues into my responsibility. The fact is they are simply understaffed and their processes automated to put the burden on the customer so they pocket more profit. That's designing for profit over customer experience. And I still have no internet.

Century link is the worst. These people charged me for a 100mbps plan for 3 years knowing full well that the equipment they had provided me couldn’t support even a fraction of those speeds. Then when I discovered this and confronted them about it they offered me 3 months of free service. I agreed. Now one month into that free period and my internet is shut off for non-payment. But it takes an act of Congress to speak to a person there. Hours and hours on hold and then they hang up on you. I hate this company. They are monsters.
