About Viasat
Viasat is one of the two traditional satellite internet providers in the US. It operates a satellite network that covers the entire country, allowing even the most remote locations to connect to the internet.
Why choose Viasat internet?
Viasat gives you multiple options for internet plans depending on how much download speed and data you need. It currently offers the fastest speeds available on a traditional satellite connection, making it a good choice for those who want more out of their internet service. As with all satellite internet, it’s much slower and more expensive than wired connections, so it’s a good option when there are no other internet services in the area.
Pros
- Highest satellite speeds
- Wide availability
Cons
- Higher monthly cost
- Limited data
- High Latency
How does Viasat compare to other providers?
There are a lot of new providers competing for the satellite internet market, including low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations like Starlink. Viasat has the advantage of being an established provider with proven technology, making it a good choice for rural internet customers who want faster speeds, higher data caps, and more plan options.
FAQ
How many satellite internet providers are there?
There are two major satellite internet providers: Viasat and HughesNet. They are the only traditional satellite internet companies operating in the US, however, there are numerous companies attempting to establish LEO satellite internet service. The only one currently available is Starlink, but other companies, including Project Kuiper (owned by Amazon), Telesat, LeoSat, and OneWeb (funded by Tokyo-based SoftBank Group), are in the process of building their own LEO satellite constellations.
Is Viasat available in cities?
Yes, you can get Viasat even if you live in an urban area with other options, though options like fiber, cable, and DSL are usually going to be faster and cheaper. Satellite is also poorly suited to activities like video chat, online games, and streaming video. We generally only suggest satellite internet providers when there are no other options available.
